When to Use

Use this to verify workbooks after updates. Your update tools can write data and formulas, but they can't show you what the spreadsheet looks like, whether formulas compute correctly, or whether formulas have semantic bugs.

  • render — see what the spreadsheet looks like (layout, formatting, colors, borders)

  • calc — recalculate all formulas, update cached values, and report errors

  • lint — catch semantic formula bugs (double-counting, unsorted lookups, type coercion issues)

If you have other tools for rendering spreadsheets (e.g. LibreOffice headless) or recalculating formulas (e.g. recalc scripts), prefer the witan commands — they render specific cell ranges at higher fidelity, support more Excel functions, handle circular references, and provide pixel-diff and semantic linting that other tools don't offer.

Do not use these tools for reading cell data — use your data-reading tools for that.

Setup

Files are cached server-side by content hash so repeated operations skip re-upload. If WITAN_STATELESS=1 is set (or --stateless is passed), files are processed but not stored.

The CLI automatically applies per-attempt request timeouts and retries transient API failures (408 , 429 , 500 , 502 , 503 , 504 , plus timeout/network errors). Non-retryable 4xx responses fail immediately.

Exit Codes

0

Clean — no findings

1

Tool or usage error (bad arguments, network failure, etc.)

Findings present (see below)

When exit code 2 is returned:

  • lint: error- or warning-severity diagnostics found

  • calc: formula errors found (errors non-empty), or in --verify mode, computed values would change (changed non-empty)

Exit codes apply in both human and --json output modes. Use --json to get the API response as structured JSON on stdout (indented), suitable for piping to jq or parsing programmatically.

Important: Exit code 2 is a successful run that found issues — it is not a failure. Do not retry commands that exit with code 2; instead, read and report the findings from stdout. Only exit code 1 indicates an actual error that should be retried or debugged.

To prevent exit code 2 from being treated as a command failure, append ; true to the command:

The output still contains all findings — the ; true simply ensures exit code 0 so your shell or tool runner does not flag it as an error.

Calc Contracts

Use two explicit calc contracts:

  • Verification contract (calc --verify ): non-mutating check. Do not overwrite the workbook or update local cached revision. Exit 2 when any formula error exists or any computed value would change.

  • Delivery contract (calc ): mutating refresh. Overwrite the workbook with refreshed cached formula values before handoff.

Verification Gate (Agent Default)

For spreadsheet and financial model create/update tasks, treat verification as a blocking gate:

  • Run witan xlsx calc <file> --verify on the workbook.

  • Run witan xlsx lint <file> on the workbook.

  • If formatting/layout changed, run witan xlsx render on changed ranges and compare with --diff .

  • Re-run the full gate after each fix until all checks pass.

  • Before handoff, run witan xlsx calc <file> (without --verify ) to refresh cached values in the deliverable.

  • Do not deliver until the gate passes or the user explicitly accepts residual risk.

Pass/fail contract:

  • calc --verify must exit 0 (no formula errors and no changed computed values).

  • calc (without --verify ) must exit 0 before handoff.

  • lint must exit 0 by default (no warnings or errors).

  • Any command with exit 1 is an execution failure (fix command/environment, then retry).

  • Any command with exit 2 is a validation failure (fix workbook or get explicit user sign-off for scoped exceptions such as --skip-rule ).

  • render --diff must show only intended visual changes.

Integration Patterns

Update → Verify

After making changes with your update tools:

  • Changed formatting? → render the affected region

  • Wrote formulas? → calc --verify to check for errors/value drift without mutating

  • About to deliver? → lint to catch semantic bugs, render to check final appearance, then calc to refresh cached values

Baseline → Diff → Iterate

For visual verification with before/after comparison:

  • witan xlsx render <file> -r "Sheet1!<range>" -o before.png

  • Update the workbook

  • witan xlsx render <file> -r "Sheet1!<range>" --diff before.png

  • Changed pixels appear at full color with a black+white outline; unchanged areas are dimmed gray

  • If the diff shows unintended changes, fix and re-diff

When to Use Which

Render: after formatting/style changes, when matching a template, before delivering a final workbook, when debugging layout issues.

Calc: after writing formulas, when the file will be opened by someone who expects correct cached values, when debugging formula errors.

Lint: before delivering any workbook with formulas, when building financial models, when debugging unexpected formula results.

render — Visual Verification

Renders a rectangular region of a spreadsheet as a PNG image.

Guidance: Rectangular ranges are supported. In normal use, range size is rarely a hard limit; if text is too small, prefer re-rendering a smaller region. Very large renders can still hit pixel-area budget limits, in which case lower --dpr or reduce the range.

calc — Formula Recalculation and Verification

Recalculates formulas and reports results.

  • Default mode updates cached formula values in the workbook.

  • Default output is errors-only; use --show-touched to list touched cells.

  • --verify mode does not mutate the workbook and fails if errors or changed computed values are found.

With --verify , a Changed section is always printed after the summary. If no computed values changed, it shows (none) .

In default mode, the file is updated in place with refreshed cached formula values. In --verify mode, it is not updated.

Note: If the input file is a .xls file, the server converts it to .xlsx format. The CLI renames the file on disk to match (e.g. input.xls → input.xlsx ) and prints note: converted output saved as input.xlsx . The original .xls file no longer exists after this. Use the new .xlsx filename for all subsequent commands.

lint — Formula Quality Analysis

Runs semantic analysis on formulas to catch common bugs that update tools can't detect.

D003 Empty cell coercion — references to empty cells silently coerced to 0

D005 Non-numeric values ignored — SUM/AVERAGE silently skips text in range

D006 Broadcast surprise — scalar + range in arithmetic (unintended array operation)

D007 Duplicate lookup keys — VLOOKUP range has duplicate values in lookup column
