ArcGIS Starter App

Use this skill to create ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript applications with TypeScript and Vite. Choose between a minimal setup for quick prototyping or a production-ready configuration with full tooling.

Prerequisites

 • ArcGIS account: An ArcGIS Location Platform, ArcGIS Online, or ArcGIS Enterprise account is required to access content and services.

 • Access token: Create an access token through your portal with appropriate privileges (basemaps, geocoding, routing, etc.) and configure allowed referrers for production use.

 • Node.js: LTS version (20+) with npm or pnpm.

Note: As of v4.34, CSS for Map Components loads automatically when using npm — no manual CSS import for @arcgis/map-components is needed. The @arcgis/core CSS import is only required when using Core API widgets directly.

Framework Integration

React 19

Map Components are web components (custom elements). In React 19, use them directly and attach event listeners with the on prefix:

import "@arcgis/map-components/dist/components/arcgis-map"; import "@arcgis/map-components/dist/components/arcgis-zoom";

function App() { return ( <arcgis-map basemap="topo-vector" center="-118.24,34.05" zoom={12} onarcgisViewReadyChange={(e: CustomEvent) => { const { view } = e.detail; console.log("View ready:", view); }} > <arcgis-zoom slot="top-left"></arcgis-zoom> </arcgis-map> ); }

Important: Use event listeners (e.g., onarcgisViewReadyChange ) rather than calling methods directly on the element ref, since the component may not be defined yet at render time.

Angular

Add CUSTOM_ELEMENTS_SCHEMA to your module or standalone component so Angular recognizes non-Angular elements:

import { CUSTOM_ELEMENTS_SCHEMA, Component } from "@angular/core";

@Component({ selector: "app-map", standalone: true, schemas: [CUSTOM_ELEMENTS_SCHEMA], template: <arcgis-map basemap="topo-vector" center="-118.24,34.05" [zoom]="12"> <arcgis-zoom slot="top-left"></arcgis-zoom> </arcgis-map> , }) export class MapComponent {}

Import the Map Components CSS explicitly in your root stylesheet:

/* styles.css */ @import "@arcgis/map-components/dist/components/arcgis-map/arcgis-map.css";

TypeScript Configuration

Set moduleResolution to "node16" or "bundler" in tsconfig.json to properly resolve @arcgis/map-components package exports:

{ "compilerOptions": { "moduleResolution": "bundler" } }

README.md

My ArcGIS App

A web mapping application built with ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript.

Prerequisites

 • Node.js 20+
 • pnpm (recommended) or npm

Setup

 1. Install dependencies: pnpm install

 2. Copy environment file and add your API key: cp .env.example .env

 3. Start development server: pnpm dev

 4. Build for production: pnpm build

Scripts

 • pnpm dev - Start development server
 • pnpm build - Build for production
 • pnpm preview - Preview production build
 • pnpm lint - Run ESLint
 • pnpm format - Format code with Prettier
 • pnpm format:check - Check code formatting

Git Hooks

This project uses simple-git-hooks for automated checks:

 • pre-commit: Runs lint-staged (ESLint + Prettier)
 • pre-push: Runs TypeScript type checking

CI/CD

GitHub Actions workflows:

 • test.yml: Runs on PRs - security audit, lint, format, type check, build
 • deploy.yml: Deploys to GitHub Pages on push to main

Configuration

 • API Key: Set VITE_ARCGIS_API_KEY in .env
 • Web Scene ID: Update YOUR_WEBSCENE_ID in index.html

Technologies

 • ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript
 • Calcite Design System
 • TypeScript
 • Vite
 • ESLint + Prettier
 • GitHub Actions

Quick Start

pnpm create vite my-arcgis-app --template vanilla-ts cd my-arcgis-app pnpm add @arcgis/map-components @arcgis/core @esri/calcite-components pnpm add -D eslint @eslint/js typescript-eslint eslint-config-prettier eslint-plugin-import eslint-plugin-unicorn globals prettier simple-git-hooks lint-staged pnpm run prepare pnpm dev

Common Pitfalls

API key not configured: The app references an environment variable that does not exist or is empty.

// Anti-pattern: referencing env var without creating .env file import esriConfig from "@arcgis/core/config"; esriConfig.apiKey = import.meta.env.VITE_ARCGIS_API_KEY as string; // .env file is missing or VITE_ARCGIS_API_KEY is empty

// Correct: create .env file with a valid API key // .env // VITE_ARCGIS_API_KEY=AAPTxy...your_actual_key_here

import esriConfig from "@arcgis/core/config"; esriConfig.apiKey = import.meta.env.VITE_ARCGIS_API_KEY as string;

Impact: Without a valid API key, basemap tiles and location services (geocoding, routing) fail to load. The map renders as a grey or blank canvas with no visible error in the UI.

Wrong moduleResolution in tsconfig: Using "node" instead of "node16" or "bundler" prevents TypeScript from resolving package exports.

// Anti-pattern: moduleResolution "node" cannot resolve package exports { "compilerOptions": { "moduleResolution": "node" } }

// Correct: use "node16" or "bundler" for package exports support { "compilerOptions": { "moduleResolution": "bundler" } }

Impact: TypeScript cannot resolve @arcgis/map-components subpath exports (e.g., @arcgis/map-components/dist/components/arcgis-map ). The build fails with "Cannot find module" errors at compile time.

Calcite assets not configured: Calcite icons and components require the asset path to be set at runtime.

// Anti-pattern: importing Calcite components without setting asset path import "@esri/calcite-components/dist/components/calcite-shell"; // No setAssetPath call - icons and internal assets fail to load

// Correct: set the Calcite asset path before using components import "@esri/calcite-components/dist/components/calcite-shell"; import { setAssetPath as setCalciteAssetPath } from "@esri/calcite-components/dist/components";

setCalciteAssetPath("https://js.arcgis.com/calcite-components/3.3.3/assets");

Impact: Calcite icons render as empty boxes, action buttons show no icons, and some components (like calcite-shell ) may not lay out correctly because their internal assets cannot be fetched.
