The Band-Aid was invented in 1921 by J&J employee Earle Dickson because his wife Josephine frequently cut herself cooking and the existing method (gauze + tape) was impractical. Dickson showed his prototype to management, who initially dismissed it — but after testing, J&J gave free Band-Aids to Boy Scout troops to create awareness. The Tylenol tampering crisis of 1982, when seven people died from cyanide-laced capsules, is taught in every business school as the gold standard of crisis management: J&J recalled 31 million bottles at a cost of $100M, introduced tamper-proof packaging, and regained 95% of market share within a year.
