- Conversion rate — Sales per page visit, tracked by keyword. High CVR for a keyword = higher rank for that keyword.
- Sales velocity & history — Consistent organic sales tell Amazon the product is trusted.
- Click-Through Rate (CTR) — Driven by main image, title, price, and star rating. High CTR = product appears relevant.
- Keyword relevance — Semantic match between listing content and customer search queries (NLP-based, not just keyword density).
- Seller authority — Positive feedback score, low ODR (Order Defect Rate), low return rate, selling history length.
- Fulfillment method — FBA ranks higher than FBM due to Prime eligibility and shipping speed.
- Reviews and ratings — Don't directly boost rank but dramatically affect conversion.
- Competitive pricing — Algorithm won't surface a listing if pricing isn't competitive.
- Internal PPC — Sponsored ads still influence organic rank via sales velocity, but less than pre-A10.
Key insight: A10 rewards organic performance and real demand signals. Keyword stuffing and PPC-only strategies are less effective. Focus on driving real clicks, real conversions, and real external traffic.
PART 2: LISTING ANATOMY — CHARACTER LIMITS & RULES (2025)
Product Title
- Character limit: Under 200 characters (most categories). Some categories cap at 125–150 characters (electronics: 150, apparel: stricter).
- Recommended length: 80–150 characters for readability and mobile display. Amazon's algorithm prioritizes the first 80 characters.
- Format: Capitalize first letter of each word (except prepositions/conjunctions). No ALL CAPS.
- Required elements: Brand name, product type, key feature/differentiator, size/quantity/variant where relevant.
- Structure template:
[Brand] [Product Type] – [Key Feature], [Size/Qty], [Color/Variant] - Prohibited: Special characters (!, $, ?, _) unless in brand name. Promotional language (Best, #1, Free Shipping, Guaranteed). Subjective claims. Repeated keywords.
- January 2025 update: Amazon auto-corrects non-compliant titles after 14-day warning. Repeated words now limited.
Bullet Points (Key Product Features)
- Count: Up to 5 for sellers; up to 10 for vendors. At least 3 recommended.
- Character limit: 200–250 characters per bullet (some categories: 150). Amazon indexes first 1,000 characters total.
- Format: Start with capital letter. No end punctuation. No ALL CAPS headers. Do not begin with the brand name (as of 2024 update).
- Content rules: Highlight unique features. No pricing, shipping, or company info. No promotional claims. No comparative claims vs. competitors. No awards/accolades without supporting details. No subjective claims. Remove duplication across bullets.
- SEO: Keywords are indexed from bullets. Position doesn't affect weight — just include the keyword once. Don't repeat keywords already in title.
- Indexing note: First ~1,000 characters of bullets are indexed. Stay within 200-char limits to ensure full indexing.
Product Description
- Character limit: Up to 2,000 characters.
- Format: Plain text only. No HTML tags (Amazon stripped them). No markdown.
- Content: Expand on bullet points. Add use cases, brand story, unique selling proposition.
- A+ Content: Brand Registry members can replace description with A+ Content (enhanced images, comparison charts, rich layout). A+ Content improves conversion by 3–10% on average.
Backend Search Terms
- Limit: 250 bytes (1 byte = 1 character for letters/numbers; 2 bytes for symbols).
- Rules: Exceeding 250 bytes causes Amazon to ignore ALL keywords. No commas needed. No repeated keywords (already in title/bullets). No competitor brand names. No irrelevant terms (keyword stuffing). Separate words with spaces.
- Additional fields for keywords: Intended Use, Target Audience, Subject Matter, Other Attributes — use these for secondary keywords.
Images
- Main image: White background (RGB 255,255,255). Product fills 85%+ of frame. JPEG format. Minimum 1,000px on longest side (1,600+ recommended for zoom). No text, logos, or watermarks on main image.
- Secondary images: Show product in use, show dimensions/scale, show packaging, show features close-up. Minimum 3 required (as of Jan 2024 update for hardlines).
- Videos: Strongly recommended. Increases dwell time, which is a ranking signal.

What Is a Flat File?
A flat file is a tab-delimited or CSV spreadsheet Amazon uses to create or update product listings in bulk. It is also called an inventory file template. Amazon recommends flat files for sellers managing 50+ SKUs.

Update vs. Partial Update
- Update: Overwrites ALL fields with whatever is in the file. Any blank cell wipes existing data.
- PartialUpdate: Only updates the columns you fill in. Use this when editing specific attributes on existing listings. Always use PartialUpdate for edits unless you have all data.
FBA vs FBM Fields
- FBA listings: Set

Rule: If you have a credential, name it specifically. If you don't, cut the claim.

Rule: Every -ing clause in a bullet is usually a nothing clause. Cut it or replace with a specific fact.
4. Promotional / Ad-like Language Words to kill: premium, luxury, stunning, breathtaking, vibrant, groundbreaking, revolutionary, innovative, boasts, nestled, commitment to excellence, must-have, perfect, amazing, incredible, rich (figurative)
Amazon before: "Experience the stunning luxury of our premium handcrafted leather wallet, boasting groundbreaking RFID-blocking technology." Amazon after: "Full-grain leather. 6 card slots, 2 cash pockets. RFID blocking blocks 13.56 MHz frequencies (standard credit card range)."
Rule: Amazon buyers are suspicious of hype. Specs and specifics close sales. Adjectives don't.
5. Vague Attributions / Weasel Words Words to kill: experts say, studies show, customers love, professionals recommend, many users report, industry leaders agree

Rule: Cite the actual source or cut the claim entirely. Fake authority destroys trust.

LANGUAGE AND GRAMMAR PATTERNS

Watch for co-occurring AI words — 2+ of these in one bullet is a red flag.
8. Copula Avoidance (Dodging "is/are/has") Words to kill: serves as, stands as, marks, represents, boasts, features, offers (when substituting "is/has")
Amazon before: "This knife serves as the ideal tool for precision cutting and boasts a full-tang blade." Amazon after: "This knife is built for precision cutting. The blade is full-tang, extending through the handle for balance."
9. Negative Parallelisms Patterns to kill: "It's not just X, it's Y", "Not merely X, but Y", "More than just X"
Amazon before: "It's not just a water bottle — it's a lifestyle statement for serious hydration." Amazon after: "32oz. Keeps drinks cold 24 hours, hot 12 hours."
10. Rule of Three Overuse Pattern to kill: Forcing everything into groups of three — features, benefits, and use cases / innovation, quality, and craftsmanship
Amazon before: "Perfect for camping, hiking, and outdoor adventures. Durable, lightweight, and reliable." Amazon after: "Rated for 3-season use down to 20°F. Weighs 1.2 lbs."
Use the natural number of items. If there are two real things, say two things.
11. Synonym Cycling (Elegant Variation) Pattern: AI avoids repeating words by cycling through synonyms: product / item / unit / purchase / piece
Amazon before: "This product is our best-selling item. The unit arrives fully assembled. Each piece is hand-inspected." Amazon after: "Arrives fully assembled. Hand-inspected before shipping."
Pick the right word and repeat it when clearest. Don't cycle synonyms to appear "varied."
12. False Ranges Pattern: "from X to Y" where X and Y aren't on a real spectrum
Amazon before: "Suitable for everything from casual weekend wear to formal business settings." Amazon after: "Machine washable. Available in 12 colors." (or name the actual use cases if they matter)
STYLE PATTERNS
13. Em Dash Overuse Pattern: Using — frequently within sentences for "punchy" effect
Amazon before: "The knife—crafted from German steel—features a full tang—ensuring lifetime durability." Amazon after: "German steel blade. Full-tang construction. Lifetime warranty."
14. Boldface Overuse Pattern: Bolding random phrases mechanically throughout bullets
Amazon before: "Premium quality materials with advanced technology for superior performance." Amazon after: "1050D ballistic nylon shell. YKK zippers. Laptop sleeve fits up to 17 inches."
If everything is bold, nothing is. In bullets, bold is almost never needed.
15. Inline-Header Lists Pattern: Bullets that start with Bold Header: then a sentence about it

16. Title Case in Headings Pattern: Capitalizing All Main Words In Headings
Amazon copy: Use sentence case for any internal A+ content headings. "How to use" not "How To Use This Product For Best Results"
17. Emojis in Bullets Amazon before:

Amazon after: Cut all emojis. They make listings look low-quality and amateur. Amazon's own style guide prohibits them in titles; avoid in bullets too.
18. Curly Quotation Marks Use straight quotes ("like this") not curly quotes ("like this"). Most flat files handle this automatically, but double-check copy pasted from Word or Google Docs.
COMMUNICATION PATTERNS
19. Chatbot Artifacts Words to kill: "I hope this helps", "Feel free to", "Of course!", "Certainly!", "Would you like to", "Let me know if", "Here is your listing"
These should never appear in actual Amazon copy. If Claude is generating a listing draft, strip all conversational framing before presenting the final content.

Customers don't care that you care. They care what you'll do when something goes wrong.
FILLER AND HEDGING

Exception: For health claims, precise qualifying language is REQUIRED by Amazon and FDA. "May help support" is legally necessary for supplements — don't over-strip hedges in regulated categories.

Does the bullet/description read like a knowledgeable friend explaining the product — or like a spec sheet generated by a machine?
Good Amazon copy sounds like a person who actually used the product: "The blade holds an edge longer than my old German knife — I've sharpened it twice in six months." Bad Amazon copy sounds like a product listing: "This premium knife features superior edge retention and high-quality German steel."
You can't write it exactly like the friend — Amazon has rules about first person and claims — but the specificity, the directness, and the acknowledgment of what the product actually does (and doesn't do) should feel like it came from a person who knows it.
Final audit question before any copy output: "What makes this so obviously AI-generated?" List remaining tells. Fix them. Then output.
